Keep Fire Far From Your Abode By Keeping These 4 Household Items Nice and Clean

It’s easy to unintentionally expose yourself to a potential fire hazard. From too many candles to faulty extension cords and power strips, there are many things that can attract fire-related trouble. In fact, some things can become a fire hazard just from lack of cleaning. Here are a few of those types of items, which should be cleaned regularly to mitigate the risk of a fire.

Toaster Ovens

If you’re like most Americans, you probably use your toaster oven pretty frequently – every day, even. This is why it’s crucial that you also clean these small appliances regularly. Crumbs often accumulate in toaster ovens, and these bits of food can sometimes catch fire after being reheated one too many times. It’s also possible for cheese or other ingredients to melt onto the heating panel, which can spell trouble. Clean the crumbs after every use and double-check that nothing is touching the heat source.

Heaters

Do you have a space heater in your home? Be wary of the many fire hazards associated with them. Over time dust will naturally accumulate around these and other heaters in your apartment. If you don’t regularly remove the dust, you could accidentally create a fire hazard. Get in the habit of dusting your home at least once a week and you will help prevent house fires caused by dust igniting. And, always remember to avoid having a heating source near linens, curtains, or any other flammable substance.

Rangehoods

The range hood, which is located above your range, can absorb grease and debris over time. Eventually, the filter could become clogged, which will prevent it from allowing exhaust to escape, possibly while destroying your ceiling with bubbles and residue. As you can guess, these are big fire hazards! Luckily, it is easy to clean your rangehood. Simply wash it every month with hot water, baking soda, and degreasing soap.
