Better Your Chances Against Getting Cancer with Some Must-Follow Diet Tips

You probably already know the basics of preventing cancer: don’t smoke, maintain a healthy weight, and drink alcohol in moderation. The next step is a simple one. Experts say that eating right can go a long way towards preventing some diseases. The American Cancer Society estimates that as many as 35 percents of cancer deaths may be related to dietary factors.

What constitutes a healthy diet? One that is low in fat and high in fiber, fruits, vegetables, and grain products. Recommendations include limiting red meat consumption to under three ounces daily, limiting fatty foods, avoiding salty snacks, not eating charred foods, and limiting alcohol consumption to two per day for men and one per day for women.

Plant-based foods appear to be most protective against cancer. Yet, according to the Centers for Disease Control, only about 25 percent of adults in the U.S. eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Some experts suggest that eating up to nine servings of fruits and vegetables contributes to lowering cancer risk. But how do you get that many servings in a day?

Start by taking simple steps to increase your fruits and vegetable intake. Add blueberries to your morning bowl of cereal, add tomatoes and lettuce to your lunchtime sandwich, get veggies on your pizza, and choose fruit for any snacks during your day. Pretty soon eating all those good foods will come more naturally and you will be on your way to better health and a reduced risk of cancer.
